HOw does an action or its faults affect accuracy?
Are there inherently more accurate actions?

Of course some actions are more accurate than others.
Any action design that promotes reproducability promotes accuracy.
High tolerances help accuracy (but in general decrease reliability).
The same high tolerances that promote accuracy, also tend to make guns more susceptible to malfunction because of dirt, fouling, etc.
So guns that are built for accuracy are often not quite as accurate or robust as ones built for reliability.
In terms of rifles, in GENERAL: bolt actions are considered the most accurate, followed by pumps and levers, then semi-automatics.
Of course there are all sorts of individual exceptions with some bolt guns being not that accurate, and some semi-automatics being super-accurate.0 -
In addition to the action, the design of the rifle itself will have a bearing on accuracy- as in one piece or two piece stock. One autoloader was designed with a dovetail cut on barrel underside for a gas block, and another cut on the top for a sight- putting a curse on barrel harmonics. Autos may have problems with a barrel being truly free floated, due to gas systems, where bolt guns lend themselves readily to it. DOUBLE rifles had to be regulated so that a given weight bullet would shoot to a common point from either barrel at a given range. As the man just said, reproducability is the key factor to high degrees of accuracy. 0 -
When it comes to accuracy, rigidity, and ZERO stress are the name of the game, when it comes to actions and barrels. Think of the action as being the launching platform. The more solid, and stabal it is, the better it will perform.
As a rule ...bolt actions 99 percent of the time rule the accuracy game...although there are service rifles that are coming into severe competition.
