Yugo SKS reliability issues, any advice?

Went out shooting yesterday with a friend, and the new (or rather new used surplus) Yugo SKS showed a depressing number of stovepipes and failures to eject using the standard "military classic" Wolf 7.62x39 ammo.

Usually these guns runs near 100%. The only thing I can think is that the extractor might be gummed up with cosmoline or something.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

    scrubb the chamber, and as you said check the extractor. Old euro cosmoline can form hard to clean deposits in the chamber as well as the barrel.

    Yugo SKS's are quite reliable BUT you must first take it COMPLETELY apart & clean out all grease. This includes bolt disassembly (done by driving out the retaining pin).

    The rifle grenade gas valve is a very common problem, on these SKS's.

    either your frend dident clean it.or it has a chinese gas tube on it i put a nice looking one on my sks and it wouldent cycle right it would half cock and stovepipe not eject at all.if you have another handy change the upper handguard/gas tube asmy. thatshuld fix it

    It was cleaned, but I'm pretty sure he didn't drive out any pins or disassemble the bolt.

    I'll go tell him to try that, and if it still isn't working suggest the replacement gas valve.

    Ensure that he pulled the gas tube, gas piston and the gas piston extender and completely clean them all.

    Mine was so packed with cosmoline, the piston and extender were almost immovable.
