Shotgun for Skeet Shooting

I'm new to shooting. I would like a recommendation for an inexpensive shotgun for occasional shooting. My budget is $300-$400.

    Second He-Dog'sw suffestion. Also, the Stoeger A3000 is about that price range and gives you an O/U with skeet tubes for faster acquisition of second shots...the last station is a toughie with a pump! The Stoeger is not the Cadillac of O/U's, but is more than functional and you wouldn't be afraid to take it into the field either?!

    I shoot a Mossberg Silver Reserve O/U often. they are $100 more than your price range, but are a great starter gun and I think are more comfortable then the Stoegers, and are lighter if you want to think about hunting. Plus it looks better.

    If you are really going to shoot skeet the fit of the stock is very important. Too long or short will make life miserable also a double or auto will make it a lot eaasier.

    I will back up He Dog with the Remington 870. I will go a bit further to say get a used Wingmaster or a new Express. I would go with a 21 inch turkey barrel, and it can fill many needs...home defense, skeet shooting, trap shooting...yes i use mine with the turkey choke for shooting trap...works well. It also works well for upland birds, and of course turkey hunting.

    Normally I'd be the first to agree on an 870 as being the best choice, but skeet is going to require two shots in rapid succession..

    In this case perhaps an 1100 would be better suited to the task.

    Pretty tough shooting skeet with a pump, I use a semi auto or over under. Either one is good for quick doubles in trap, skeet, or sporting clays.

    I must respectfully disagree with the 870 choice for skeet. The Condor is IMHO a waste of money, they are not well balanced and tend to rust easily. Pumps are fine for the experienced skeet shooter, but not as a 1st gun.

    As above, try to find a good used 1100 or 1187 with crew in chokes. (Winchester 1400 MII or Mossberg 5500 will be adequate although not my choice) If not shooting to much the Mossberg O/U will do. With the auto's you can shoot skeet, trap, sporting clays, and change barrels for slugs. If you are going to shoot competition skeet then you need an O/U, but that's down the road a little it sounds like.

    870's a great gun (I own several), just pump action is not a good choice for starting skeet.

    DO NOT buy an off brand Auto, they use some plastic "guts" that don't last long.

    Other good auto's, if you can find one at your price: Beretta 390 or 391, Browning A5 or Gold, Benelli.

    Shop for the gun you want, and then make sure it "fits" you.
