Why does my 94 Winchester only hold 3 rounds

I purhcased a Winchester 94 and while loading I could only put three rounds in the Tube, including the one loaded in the reciver. I took the tube spring out and the spring and did not see a plug in the gun. Does this gun only take 3 rounds I assume it should take 5 to 9 rounds by the length of the mag tube. Any help out there or should I return the gun to the seller?

    Are you letting the loading gate close between loading rounds (wrong way), or are you leaving the last round out on the gate and than pushing it in with the next one (right way)?
    IOW what might be happening is that the gate is hanging on the rim of the last round in the tube.

    Is your Model 94 a Carbine with a 20" barrel, or a Sporting Rifle with a 26" barrel, and does it have a full length magazine tube?

    I think you are correct, I was loading the gun incorrectly, I will try the other way by pushing in the rounds with each other, Thanks for the useful information, Jeff Rice USN Retired.

    The 94 .30-30 carbines, with the 20" barrel, normally hold 6 rounds. My 1975-vintage 94 .30-30, with 20" barrel, and full-length magazine will let me push a 7th round through the loading gate, and it will feed that 7th round, too. ...but, the next round, which is the first out of the tube, will often not feed completely to the lifter/ elevator. Therefor, I always load the prescribed 6 rounds.

    Now, why you can only get a few rounds into your gun will take some cyphering![;)]

    Maybe for some reason it has been plugged.

    Chief: See if you can grab another '94, and load it. Do you wind up with the same problem? Or, have one of your "buds" load your rifle. Same problem?

    Don't know if the problem is mechanical or not, but you may as well eliminate the human from the equation right off the bat, and go from there. Best, Joe

    I found that I was not loading the gun properly. I was not pushing the rounds in with the the other rounds. Tail gunner was right on with his reply. The gun functions fine and is a great hunting rifle that will last for 40 more years. Thanks for all the valuable input.
