Remington 878 barrel
Will the Remington Mod. 58 barrel fit the Rem. Mod. 878? If so, how much modification if any is needed?

I just picked up a nice 878 auto master 12 gauge and it has a replacement barrel on it for turkey hunting. I would like to know
what readily available barrels fit this 1961 made gun? 11/87??? 1100??

NONE OF THE ABOVE, I'M TOLD THAT 870 BARRELS CAN BE MODIFIED TO WORK0 -

after two holes are drilled thru it for the gas to reach the piston tube. bob0 -
Remington 58 barrels will also fit and function. The 58 preceded the 878, and uses the same drilled/gasport 870 bbls. I've swapped 58's and 870's but never owned an 878. Would grab one at a good price if I saw one.
EDIT-- didn't want to waste a response but this is a go-to guy for these models, have bought parts for 58's from him and always a good deal, He has the lowdown on the bit size for the gas ports.--

this 878 I bought at a yard sale for $200, has the tightest, cleanest,action I ever saw on a fifty year old shotgun that was used for hunting. It even 'sounds' good when you cycle the bolt. Maybe I'm showing my age, but It sure looks like remington built a nice one here

They are nice, but didn't (878, Sportsman 58) these have issues with the receivers cracking? 0 -
Because of the way the adjusting gas piston works, you should not use
heavy magnum type loads in them. But if you stay with lite or normal
hunting shells, the 878 won't crack and the recoil felt is softer than
the same load in a 1100. bob0
