Gander Mountain Gunsmiths
Has anyone had any work done by Gander Mountain smiths. If so what is you opinion and what rates do they charge.
Also. what rate for gun repair would be considered average?

Anybody ever have any work done on a rifle by the gunsmiths at Gander Mountain stores?
I want to put a muzzle brake on my rifle but don't want to have to mail it out anywhere and I want a good job done on it ( so I won't attempt anything like that, myself [:)] )0 -
I had a muzzle brake and a trigger job done by gander mountain's regional gunsmith in central pa. They did a great job and actually were cheaper than my local gunsmith's rates. I don't recall the rates, but I am going back to them for a price on a bedding job for my remington 338 ultra mag. 0 -
I have good results with the one here in LK. Mary and they are pretty quick about getting your gun back to you 0 -
Most GM gunsmith's Ive heard of are rookies and not very good at all .. Not cheap either.. 0 -

First, let me tell you that I have never had any gunsmithing work performed by Gander Mountain. Second, I've been privy to hundreds of conversations, both pro and con, regarding the quality of work available through Gander Mountain. This should not be construed as disparaging by any means, rather that there will always be a wide range of opinions and it's still important to 'interview' your local GM 'smiths or any gunsmith for that matter, to see if they meet your needs.
Heck, I've read some atrocious reviews on the internet where some unhappy gunowner eviscerated a world-class gunsmith just because he could! Talk to them, ask them specific questions about their processes and solutions. If they match up with your ideas, go for it. Put everything in writing for the gunsmith as well as yourself. This will benefit both groups when it comes to trying to remember what was said in a conversation.
Prices will vary across the board in the U.S. I won't speak for GM but every gunsmith in every town will have their own set of prices based on cost of living, what can be charged and what needs to be charged. Some folks have higher overhead while others don't.

This survey from Brownells is not definitive by any means but it offers a range of prices and it can provide a guide when asking about prices in your local market. Personally, I'd look up several stand-alone gunsmiths in your same area to see what today's prices are. Sometimes it's easy to just go through the phone book. Well, in a metro area of about 400,000 population here in the Quad Cities proper, I only know of two gunsmiths, even using the link above.
Gander Mountain in Davenport, Ia is just as well thought of as the independent gunsmith whom is only open a few hours a week.
I have not used either as I have had no call too, but GM seems by far the most recommended to me here. Good luck in whom ever you choose.0 -
couple years ago i took my beretta mato to the GM in wichita KS to smooth out the bolt action. the gunsmith there at the time was a rookie. he kept the gun several months with no progress, i checked with him from time to time. finally i found they had fired him for such procrastinations and sent my mato to the chicago GM. it later came back with a charge of about $350, a lot of work i had not authorized, and a tool mark cut on the stock! the GM manager in wichita was clearly embarrassed and asked me to only pay for the $17 part, which i did. the action was smooth. 0
