Remington New Model Army
Good afternoon,
Yesterday I started looking at an old Remington New Model Army. First off, I see only two marks that could be martial, a "J" on the trigger guard and an "R" on the loading lever.Oh, there is what appears to be an "I" beneath the grips also. Is this martial or civilian? Then I looked on the belly of the barrel for a SN, and noted a faded "12". I figured the other numbers were simply worn off, as this old gun has been around a while. So, I pop the grips off, and staring me in the eye is a very strong number "12". For the life of me, I can't see any signs of someone buggering with these numbers. Obviously the "12" does not fall in the serial range I have found when researching this model, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to prove that the number was buggered with, or if this is some sort of freak, or perhaps the civilian run was serialed outside the military? Anyhow, any and all thoughts appreciated, as my knowledge of old Remingtons is limited. Side note, its been in the family likely 50 years plus, so any messing with the number happened quite a few years ago.
