Smith or Colt

Price not an issue---What are the differences in fit and finish, reliability, factory service, and overall quality between a Smith 66, or 19, 27 and a Colt python. Both in 4" THX HAWKSHAW

    I own and have owned several different makes and models of S&W revolvers over the years and have been very impressed with each. Currently I own a stainless 6" M686 smooth cylinder and a 5" blue M29 classic. When last in the market for a new revolver the Colts were tempting, but not tempting enough. With the money I saved buying the M29, new in the 90's, I was able to get the shop smith to port the barrel and do a great trigger job; all done and ready when my waiting period was up. Still the best advise I ever got given about buying a handgun was to buy the one that fits your hand and build best, because that will probably be one that you can shoot most naturally and probably best. Good luck with whichever you choose....

    what they said, i am biased towards Colt, i believe when you get them in your hand you will prefer the 4" Python, also do a search for 4" Pythons made , i picked one up from a retired police officer about 4 years ago on "Gun Broker.com", it was his personal side arm, he said it was fired about 150 rounds it was made in 1966 and was like new, just a slight amount of holster wear, the older Pythons are indestructible with proper care and your grand kids will be able to hand it down to their grand kids and will only increase in value, plus the prestige of owning a Python....., and that is a fact !!

    I prefer the operating processes of the Smith.

    But, if it's for display and not self defense, the Pythons are real works of art.

    Hawkshaw...I have all the Smith's you list, and several more (including a couple of Model 13 3" .357 BullB ex-FBI guns) and really like them all. But one cannot beat a Colt Python for fit, finish, realibilty, quality, timing, and the general great feel it has in one's hand. I have several of them also but my favorite is the actual one you mention...a 4" Python. It is a quality pistol and the top of the Colt line and has been ever since it was introduced. And while most guns appreciate at some $ rate over the years, the Python's seem to appreciate more, no matter how much they are used! So, if you want a great gun that you can shoot a lot and enjoy, and then give to your kids and grandkids and watch it appreciate in value over the years like a Warren Buffet stock, get the Python. Good shooting!

    I dont believe there are any significant differences between Colt & Smith in those areas. The way I see it, its like the difference between Dodge & Ford trucks. Its a matter of personal preference.

    They are both excellent guns. The Colt Python is a beautiful gun, fit & finish is awesome, I have 6 of them. I also have 4 model 19 Smiths, 3 model 66s and 4 model 27s.

    I do have a slight preference for the action of the Smith revolvers. I use a 627 for wheelgun competition. Back when I shot PPC matches, there were many guys who shot Pythons.

    I suggest trying both to see what fits your hand, aims and shoots best for you, then make your decision.

    S&W any time. As Doug Wilson stated, Colt lockwork once out of timing
    is more expensive and difficult to correct.
    I've also read The high power frames don't stand up to a lot of hot load shooting.
    I would certainly research these statements before buying a Colt Python or Anaconda.
    Additionally, retiming a worn Colt D.A.may require replacement or rebuilding by welding of internal parts.
