Question on reblueing

Can a gun that was originally color case hardened be blued? Seems like I recall that they can't, but not sure.

    Sure they can they need to have the outside polished first. If you look at most First Generation Colt Singe actions they have been refinished and the frames are now blue It will really hurt the resale value but it can be done.

    Thanks. I know about the value thing. I'm considering a "restoration" on a gun that in present condition doesn't have much value anyway.

    a lot depends on 'which' gun you are asking about. some (like the Colt) can be blued, others (Iver Johnson Champion) have cast iron frames and come out with a red/purple color.

    Ok, what is your opinion. Gun in question is a Marlin Model 47. A fairly rare rifle. Basically a re-issue of the Model 20 .22 pump action during the 1930's. They were not offered for sale. The only way to get one was to buy Marlin stock. Then it was free. Only about 4 or 5K made.
    The main differebce between the M-47 and the M-20 was cosmetic. Color case hardened finish and a checkered buttstock.
    The one I have is in shooting condition. Overall metal finish is brown. And needs buttstock replaced. (Have ordered a repro replacement).
    Should I reblue it?

    As a side note to the cast iron re-blue....there is a chemical additive to the blueing salts that will have the cast iron parts/frames coming out just as "blue" as the regular metal parts. Then it is all about time and temperature.[:)]

Then it is all about time and temperature." ......there are several of these but none work 100% you just get a darker purple, the only way to 'blue' cast iron is with a bake on paint type finish. same with win m-94 post 64 receivers.
