DOM for a Rem and Stevens?
I picked up a Stevens Favorite Model 1915 and a Remington Model 4 take down at the Reno Show, BertH saw them and told me the Stevens would be impossible to date. But I did see him get corrected on some Winchester info, so I'm holding out hope.[:D]
The .22 LR Stevens serial # is U294
I can't find any online resources for the Rem serial, it's a early version take down with the side lever, .22 Short & Long, serial # J294767. After the serial, down closer to the forend is the letter Z or N depending how you view it.
Any info on either rifle is much appreciated.

You got it backwards... the DOM for the Remington can not be determined (anything prior to 1921 is unknown). The Stevens collectors here on the forum should be able to help you narrow down a date range for the Model 1915. 0 -
Bert, I've seen the Remingtons dated, but no source of the info. Got this from Wisners on the Stevens Favorite rifles:
There is no real way to tell anything by a number or combination of numbers & a letter that appears to possibly be a serial number. It is suspected that the factory used a series of letters & numbers to some preset upper number like say 1,000 or 10,000 or even 100,000 & assigned a letter to that block of numbers, like A, F, or W. When that upper number was reached for that letter, they picked another letter & started over. Now this is not to say that these letters were in alphabetical order either. Some manufacturers would assign higher numbers at the start of a model to fool the competition into thinking they were making a lot of guns. What I am saying is that no one really knows how many of these guns were made or even a numbering sequence.0 -

Repotedly there was a fire at the Stevens factory back in the 1920's that destroyed most records. Stevens was in around that time period acquired by the Savage Arms Co. Then Savage changed ownership in the late 1960's. Again "reportedly" the new owners dumped all previous records in order to limit liability for guns made prior to thier control.
So in a general sense, it's very difficult if not impossible to date an early Stevens.
There are a couple of Savage/Stevens collector reference books out. But even they are nearly worthless beyond general info. Mostly a collection of old magazine ads.
However the Savage website does refer to a (non affiliated w/company) Savage/Stevens Historian. Who for a fee, "may" be able to help.0 -

There should be a second letter first on tells month and last letter for the year z= 1931 maybe try remington society for more information
