NEF R73 .32 mag revolver problem

Got one of these yesterday. Stainless steel, 5 shot 32 mag. Looks a lot like H&R offerings from the 80s. Nothing fancy but a nice solid gun.

One issue, while it locks up tight, the cylinder doesn't revolve when you cock the gun. I think it is the ejector- the cuts on the face of it look worn. The rotating lever that comes out of the receiver looks fine. Sorry about terminology, revolvers aren't really my bag. Gunpartscorp doesn't list the gun; I'm wondering if in fact H&R did make the same model under their name and this is a clone. Anyone know?

I paid $50 so if I have to turn the cylinder manually, what the heck.

    That model is a "continuation" of the H&R Model 504, in production from 1984 to 1986. Sounds like the cylinder bolt spring is broken. Check Numrich for parts for the 504.

    Correction - sounds like the "hand" spring or "hand" itself is broken and not contacting the "ratchet" -OR- the ratchet is worn out (less likely).

    With the cylinder removed, does the cocking lever (hand and hand spring) move forward under spring pressure and move up and down as you cock and release the hammer?
    The nose or forward, upper part should be sharp and not burred or rounded.
    You hint that the ratchet is buggered up so the hand may not engage and turn it.
    If all of the above is true, you need a hand, hand spring and ejector.
    If you cannot get the ejector separately, you need a cylinder assembly.
    Revolvers, unlike semiautos need to be fitted in these areas.
    The hand will be supplied oversize and needs to be carefully reduced in length to both engage the ratchet as the cylinder bolt has dropped out of a cylinder locking slot and rotate the cylinder enough to permit the locking bolt to drop into the next locking slot.
    This is called timing.
    This part of timing may be all that's required.
    If you're unlucky, satisfying the above will not satisfy the double action feature and more work may be needed.

    V35 has given you just about all you need to know to identify the problem. As I stated (poorly) before - parts for the H&R Model 504 will fit in this NEF revolver - but will most likely need a bit of fitting. One other thing, it is not stainless steel, it is ordnance steel with an "electroless" nickel finish - H&R and NEF did not make firearms (at least for commercial sale) out of stainless. Numrich should have parts for the 504, call them on their land line number and ask a tech. about it. The Model 504 was not produced with a "nickel finish" so you may have to settle for a blued cylinder assembly. Nice two tone touch.

    Thanks much. I think I will ask my smith what he thinks is wrong next time I'm there. Knowing that the H&R 504 parts will work should solve the issue whatever it is; even if I have to buy the whole cylinder I can try swapping just the ejector.

    Could be the hand or hand spring but with the cylinder out it does seem to operate properly. So the hand itself is fine, but could be a weak spring I suppose.
