Gun Transportation in Truck

I am getting a Nissan Frontier with a cap and the extended cab tomorrow. I have not had a truck in several years and never had one with a cap. This cap locks. Is that considered the same as a trunk for transporting purposes? I have a CCW so I can have one in the front but if I travel to a match out of state, I am wondering what I need to do when I go through some unpatriotic territory with codified infringements.

    I would think a locking topper would count the same as a trunk. You could not have easy access to it from the cab and it would require unlocking. Of course common sense and the law sometimes don't follow hand in hand so be sure to check out the places you travel to.

    I dont know if the cap qualifies but you might want to look at this website http://www.duhabins.com/ . These do qualify and are pretty handy storage other times as well.

    well in my state of WI it doesn't matter what part of the car its in, it just matters that it is completely unloaded and completely enclosed in a carrying case , no part of the gun can be visable

    Statue does not reference "trunk" of a vehicle- says not accessible from passenger compartment. In a rooftop carrier would seem to meet the requirement. See C&P:

    TITLE 18-CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
    PART I-CRIMES
    CHAPTER 44-FIREARMS
    Sec. 926A. Interstate transportation of firearms
    Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or
    regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person
    who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting,
    shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a
    firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully
    possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully
    possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the
    firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being
    transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the
    passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in
    the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's
    compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked
    container other than the glove compartment or console.

    Just make sure you put a black blanket or tarp over them back there to hide them from prying eyes.
