Advantage Arms .22 Conversion on 1911 ?

I bought one of these conversion kits a while ago and just got a chance to try it out. It is on a 1911A1, 1943 vintage Colt frame. The problem is, it will not cycle. When you rack the slide it feeds smoothly and fires the chambered round just fine... but that's it! Am I missing something here? Did I make my Colt into a single shot .22 pistol? [:D]

If anyone has one of these kits, and can help, please do.

    I've used one for years on a G 20. Thousands of rounds through it, nothing but positive results. It doesn't function well with standard velocity ammo though.

    Try CCI Mini-Mag solids, if the conversion unit doesn't work with these , then you'll know something wrong with it.

    Thanks Rufe... I'll try that. I was trying it with Winchester "Xpert HV" and Federal HP... both bulk pack ala Wally World.

    Any other tips, anybody?

    +1 on the CCI mini-mags. Sounds like you need something with a little more pop to it. That's usually the cure to most feeding issues with 22lr semi-autos.

    How does the slide run on the rails of your frame without it's recoil spring? Is it smooth feeling or does it bind at any point?

    Fitting a slide to a frame is not the easiest thing. Fitting a barrel to a slide and frame is a bitch.

    The advanage arms conversion unit has been a hit and miss operation for a long time. There are a vast number of conversion units currently on the market as well as many out of production. The two major problems is #1 getting the barrel and Magazine to both be at the proper height in reference to the frame so the centerline of the bore is also the centerline of the slide breach face and that the magazine sets high enough to give the cartridge the straightest shot at the chamber with out the bottom of the slide dragging on the top lips of the magazine. #2 matching the recoil generated by the cartridge to match the recoil spring in the conversion unit You migh want to get a spring kit from brownells fot the Marval conversion kit as well as for the S&W model 41. Find a brand of ammo that works and gives the group size that you can live with . For the most part Standard Velocity will give smaller groups if this is important to you.

    I will take your suggestions and check out another spring. I notce the "directions" (Meager as they are) say NOT to use Federal ammo.. which of course I did! [:D](Cause I had it...) But the slide seems free and nice and smooth, and it feeds out of the magazine every time. So maybe the CCI ammo will do the trick. Of course the whole idea was to use cheap ammo... and the Minimags are over twice the price of th eother stuff. Oh well...

    Recently I have been having a hard time obtaining CCI Mini-Mags. I tried a couple of mail order brands, that worked satisfactorily in the Advantage Arms conversion unit. Centurion .22 lead High Speed, ( Most Accurate), from J & G. And Fiocchi High Speed, Copper Plated, both solids and hollow points, from Graf & Son. The accuracy and function with the Centurian ammo was excellent, and the price almost as reasonable as the Walmart bulk stuff, @ $20.00 a brick. I'm going to switch over to the Centurian ammo for all my .22 shooting, as long as it's available.
