If a scope has "AO", exactly what does this mean?

hello. that means it has an " ADJUSTABLE OBJECTIVE " which means you can focus ( or adjust ) the far end of the scope.

AO = adjustable objective; meaning it adjusts the parallax out at specified distances from the scope. For a definition of parallax see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax

Bottom line means that your scope can be better adjusted for point of aim with AO than with a fixed objective. There will probably be an expert or two along with more technical explanations soon.

Back lens focuses your eye on the CROSSHAIR, the front lens focuses the "object" (target) on the CROSSHAIR. With a fixed front lens, it only focuses the object on the crosshair at one range. With an adjustable objective you cn manually focus the target onto the crosshair at any practicle range.

Paralax occures when all 3 points (objective focal point, occular focal point and crosshair) are at different places. The effect is similar to when ou point your finger at an object with one eye closed, and than change eyes. Your finger (rifle) is still pointing at the same place, but no longer appears to be.
