Ruger 10/22 is Jamming

My neighbor has a brand new 10/22.
We fired two mags through it today.
In both cases the gun jammed.
Once, on the 5th round, the second time on the 4th round.
All he had to do was rack the slide, and the shell went into the chamber.
Otherwise the rifle fired fine.
What is the problem?

Remington .22 Golden Bullet HP ammo.

    It could possibly be the feed lips/ramp on your magazine. I would try another magazine, and see if that is the problem. Another possability is that it was not prepped right, meaning that the factory goo that was sprayed on to protect for longterm storage was not removed and the gun properly lubricated. Thos Golden Bullets seem to be problematic in a lot of other auto-loaders too. Seems the lubrication they use attracts fouling, and they gum things up.

    I assume he is using "factory" mags. That said, have him try Federal .22 ammo. I have had a few problems with Remington "Golden Bullets" with their wax coating.

    Federal ammo is not coated, that might make the difference. Also, the gun needs to be clean with a dry chamber.

    The factory mags are generally pretty good.

    I'd suggest the following:

    1. Clean gun thoroughly (unfortunately, with the 10/22 that means taking it apart, though it isn't particularly hard to do).

    2. If gun still malfunctions, then try different ammo.

    Obviously #2 is easier than #1, but new guns really should start off with a thorough cleaning to get factory grease, etc out of the action.

    Also, new guns (particularly semi-automatics) may take some break-in time before they function at 100%, so this problem might just go away all by itself with no additional work on your part other than shooting some more.

    Sounds just like the last one I got. Cleaned it totaly, after the jams, ran about 300 rds thru it, now it works fine. I may clean it again someday, maybe.

    Give it a very good cleaning and change ammo. Use a lead bullet, not the Rem. golden junk [;)]

    I have quite a few of the Golden rounds and now I am wondering about it. Will it work to wipe down the cartridges before loading them to remove the wax?

    I have issues with the Remington ammo in all my semi auto guns. Federal is the way to go.

    on my 10/22 after shooting remington rounds i need scrub my clips and chamber down due to wax build up... and since quality controll on remington 22lr rounds is low not every bullet gets the proper fill of powder. so when u shoot one of those it wont create enough pressure to "auto load", thus jamming. i suggest u use CCI or Federal ammunition

    My 10-22 likes win. high velocity ammo , accurate and runs perfect. Always completly clean a new gun before firing it for the first time .
