How to repair Metal 54 Buttplate
Somebody messed big-time on this nice Mod 54 Winchester Buttplate.
I am thinking that having the grooves rewelded and then
a) Smoothing or
b) Recheckering
would be the best fix. What do you guys think?

If that's the only defect on your rifle (I think 54's are fine old rifles, by the way) I would fondle it and shoot it and, after while, that butt plate would not bother me. At all! 0 -
Does anybody have ideas? Could it be solder filled, or would you weld to fill it? 0 -
Solder won't work.
The best method would be to grind/polish the bad stuff away, and recut the good stuff. A skilled engraver could do the job, but it would be cheaper to find a replacement buttblate. The checkering is not actually cut, it's die stamped.0
