Personal protection

One of my common defenses that I use with my wife when she wants to know why I have so many guns is the "personal protection" thing. I often say "you never can tell"...

I have mostly hunting shotguns and a couple of pistols. A 44mag Taurus and a EAA Witness 9MM. This gives me some pretty good devfensive weapons, but I am thinking about getting something a little more offensive. I am not very knowledgeable about what's out there but it seems that something like an AR15 is a pretty good choice in an offensive weapon.

I'd love to hear suggestions.

    Forgetting Manufacture, Bullet wt. etc., which cal., .357 mag, or .44 special would you pick for a vehicle carry weapon. No Semi autos for the moment. THX HAWKSHAW

    Used to have one; everything that could go wrong, did. Never again.

    My philosophy is that the only good carry weapon is THE ONE YOU CARRY ON YOUR PERSON. You have no control over when A Problem will confront you; you must always be ready to respond.

    I just saw a security camera vido of a store owner who pulled his auto on the bad guy, pulled the trigger and it did not go bang because he had the safey on, the bad guy shot him four times, the only thing good about the story is that the store owner lived. I have a double action, simi-auto for personel protection and keep it with the hamer down on a round with the safety off!

    A stainless revolver by either S&W or Ruger in .357 magnum, loaded with JHP. You can forget about it being there until you need it to go "Bang".

    357 is a fine round, but there is no substitue for bullet weight when it comes to stopping power. I own severial of each, but I carry a 44 special 5 shot 3" double action revolver most of the time for personel defence.

    For a vehicle carry weapon, I would choose the Ruger GP100 in .357 4" bbl. A lot of power and very little felt recoil due to the weight. I hope that this helped out some. P.S., the Ruger is also a heck of a lot easier on the wallet than a S&W.

    .357 heavy barreled snubby, or maybe a 4" depending on draw style. If I had a good shoulder rig, I'd go with a longer barrel, slim gerth grip in .357, or .44spcl. Or.44mag, maybe.


    as tsr1965 said, if you can justify a 4" N frame, the .44mag would be a good choice.

    Ruger, security six in a .357. Fine handgun, small enough ot be a burden, yet enough at the business to take care of about any situation with controlable recoil (depends on the overall load , of course). And I believe they are quite reasonable on the wallet, yet.

    Best all out, It would be a S&W, either a 3 inch J-frame or a 2-4 inch K-frame in 357, and preferrably in stainless.

    As for the 44 special, and the 41 Rem, they are both on the N-Frame, and if you are going to go that big, go to the 44 Magnum N-frame with a 4 inch barrel. Behold though...with full house rounds it is a demon to hold on to. However, they have mid range loads for the 44, and 44 specials will work too.

    To compare a 44 special to a .357 is night and day. 44 special is in the .38+P catagory/ weak 9mm catagory. A .357 muzzle energy is around
    580 ft pds with a 125 gr hp bullet and 535 with a 158 gr. The 44 special is 310 ft. pds. with a 240 gr. bullet. Big difference in stopping power.

    Most guys don't actually handle .44 mag recoil very well. Choose the .357.
