    If you are asking for an opinion, here's mine. #1-Using some exotic handload in a real life situation would probably make some lawyer rich and you very poor. #2-The handgun shotloads don't provide much penetration. I've found the shotcap stuck in the fur of varmints shot at the range of 3-4 feet. Yes, the shot went deeper but would not have penetrated 2-3" of clothing,skin, and muscle. I've heard the "Shoot 'em in the face and blind 'em" and that intent would go hard on you in a civil court. These are things one has to consider when discussing the use of firearms. If the only handgun in reach was loaded with shotshells, I would use it. If I had any other choice of ammo, I would use that.

    I agree with Mobuck.

    In short given the choice, you pick the correct tool for the job.

    Shot pistol loads are intended for and really suitable only for snakes, rats, and other small vermin. (Hence the name "snakeshot" or "rat-shot"). For this purpose, these loads will work OK, at short range. At ranges more than a few yards, the pellets quickly spread out and lose energy making them relatively ineffective even against small animals.

    If you want to defend yourself against other people, what you want is "personal defense" ammunition.

    The last thing you want to do is shoot some angry and/or intoxicated attacker with a weak shot load making them even angrier. Worse, how would you feel if your attacker were protected from your "devastating" pistol shot load merely with a pair of sunglasses?

    Mobuck brings up very good points. Any ammunition out of the ordinary used in a firearm in a self defense situation provides a perfect forum for personal injury attorneys if it is intentional. For instance, if you are using some souped up extra hot & deadly ammo the lawyer will want to know why you are using something that law enforcement doesn't use. If you knowingly use snake shot ammo with the intent to blind even an intruder, good luck with the jury. This is one reason I generally suggest a shotgun for home self defense, most any load out of a 12 ga at close ranges is a good self defense load.
