Garand - Pointers Please

Experts,
I've skimmed the archives but just need a few key pointers to aid my decision making. Thanks in Advance. I want a couple of M1's (more for historical and less for high volume shooting). That said, I don't want a lemon either. If you were going to buy an M1 today what would your mental check list be:
1. mfr? 2. Throat wear 3. barrel wear? 4. etc?

  Unless you want actual high dollar collectors examples, your best bet would be CMP "service grade".
  that would get you a period correct gun that may or not be all matching #'s.
  there is currently an 8-12 week wait from CMP.
  there's always some being offered on the GB auction side.

  If historical is your objective, the 2 main categories would be WW2 (Springfield Armory & Winchester) or Korean War (Springfield Armory, Harrington & Richardson, & International Harvester). You might want to buy a paperback book to help (Scott Duff has several that are helpful & reasonable). Of course, most that you see have been rebuilt, & that should be OK. Tplumeri's suggestion of a CMP Service Grade rifle is good, but the wait is now 4-6 months.
  
  It's really difficult to provide you a checklist on what to look for; this is a complex subject. To avoid a lemon, your best odds are buying a rifle that comes with CMP documentation on the auction side. I've seen several CMP Collector Grade rifles sell on GB in the $1,000-1,500 range; that seems like a bargain to me.

  Get a book. "The M1 Garand: Owners Guide" By Scot A. Duff.
