Colt Colllectors, unusual Colt

My son recently acquired an unusual Colt. It is a service revolver owned by Major General "Barney" Vogel, who instituted the Navajo "Code Talker" program during the Second World War. It has documentation of ownership together with information on General Vogel and the Code Talker program.

The gun is in about 95%.

I'd appreciate a ballpark estimate of value for it.

    One of a kind firearms owned by historical personalities are notoriously difficult to appraise. This is because the value is not so much in the firearm itself, but in it's association with the person that owned it.

    Your best bet to my way of thinking, would be to contact one of the large auction houses that specialize in firearms. Many of the guns they handle are similar to yours, in that they were either owned by or were associated with some famous person or event.

    Sorry, should have mentioned. It is a .38 Special caliber double action Colt.

    Can't take pictures, but the pistol is an honest 95%, and the documentation is authentic.

    You will need to seek the services of a qualified appraiser/auction house that has experience with this type of weapon.

    Exactly what the documentation is will greatly affect the value. Does it have a Colt letter showing it was sent to the General? Does it have Army documentation showing that it was issued to the General and when, etc., etc..

    I don't know if anyone can really give a good estimate.

    The value is going to depend on interested parties bidding at auction.

    All I can say is that it should be worth at least a little bit more than a similar gun without the provenance you mention.

    How much more depends on how many (if any) persons are interested in its as a specific collectors item.

    To the right person(s), it could be worth a lot more. Whether or not this person exists or is likely to bid at auction is the hard part.
