Exploding block targets

My borther has wanted to get ahold of legal exploding targets. He found the ingedients on some website. I don't know if I should encourage him to try it. I don't know if it is legal.

Anyone have any ideas or experience?

Is it ilegal to produce your own explosive targets. I know it is not going to be smiled on by LE departments.

    I remember buying exploding targets at a gun show back in the 1990's. They were great fun.

    The real good ones are no longer made,but there is one out there that you mix yourself. We mixed a bunch up, no problems, but they don't always work.

    Yeah, the flourescent orange stick-ons. They were a lot of fun and I wish I could find them again!

    tannerite is a hoot! (see link in spider's post)
    it's legal to ship in all 50 states and is very safe.
    it will only detonate with a rifle round. anything bigger than a 22 works just fine at 100 yards.
    it comes in 1/2 and 1 pound sizes, but you can combine for as big as you want.
    I put 1/2 pounders behind the bullseye of a standard target.
    used to be a laugh not telling other shooters, but now everyone knows about it and are dissappointed when I don't do it!

    Under FEDERAL law, Tannerite is legal. Beware of attempting to make your own. Tannerite has fought the legal battles for THEIR product, not for what you may attempt to put together. Google 18 USC Sec. 844.

    Does that prohibit EVERYTHING? No. Is it a complex law? Yes.

    "Making your own" can also be a VERY dangorous undertaking. Yes, I do make explosives- with a Federal license. There are a lot of things I would NOT attempt to make. Bottom line- want a bang? Buy some Tannerite.

    Have shot some tannerite and it does make a big boom. Kinda struck me as a silly waste of money.

    Pietro.... I would suggest sticking with commercially made exploding targets. Making your own could get you hurt or you could inadvertantly violate some explosives law.

    I used to buy these at our local gun shows....They will start a fire.

    The Tannerite targets make a much bigger boom and will not start a fire.

    I nearly burnt down the center range at GunWorld in Bensenville Illinois a number of years ago using Bullseye brand exploding targets. The place was old, poorly ventilated and had exposed ceiling beams of dry wood. I had a nice "11 x "17 card stock target that I adhered the thing to, and was using my Makarov at 50 feet to try to make it a little more sporting. From what I can tell, one of the first of about 10 rounds nicked the powder resevoir, and the 10th hit the primer. What ensued was something of a conflagration. A "pop" and fizzle, followed by a pretty serious sheet of flames that climbed up the target and hanger, and lit the cieling on fire. I had to take the time to get the other people on the range to clear their weapons and call a VERY loud cease fire while I looked for a non-existant fire extinguisher. The guy next to me had a nice shooting mat that he threw me and I beat the flames out...just barely, might I add. It was really a close run thing getting the flames extinguished. I bought him a new shooting mat, and decided not to use them indoors, or at ALL for that matter from there on.

    Tannerite is a hoot! A bit expensive for a cheap thrill, but it is really neat. I once shot 5 pounds at 100 yards with a 45-70 and scared the poop out of myself. Objects were raining down from the backstop at the club I was at for a surprisingly long time, and the Delavan police showed up about 10 minutes later with some hard questions! They, fortunately saw the humor in it when I let them pop a pound off with my rifle (discharging your sidearm is something that has to be explained regardless of reason, evidently)...perma grin and giggles galore.
