Looking for solid advice home protection......
Im looking at .357 revolvers for home protection. I'm not looking to spend over $400. Taurus firearms keep coming up......any good? I need something I can count on.....any other brands out there within this price range?

Taurus or Ruger are good choices. Sometimes the Taurus guns are a bit tight so make sure to pump a couple hundred rounds downrange to make sure of proper function.
Used guns are fine as well.
Ruger Security Six is my all time fav old revolver. I bought one like new in box for under 300. Tough as nails.0 -
You'd be far better served by a beat up, $400 Smith and Wesson .357, than either of the other two, brand new.
The Smith would also appreciate, over time.

My preference would be a Ruger or an S&W.
I know too many shooters who have experienced parts breakages with Tauri. Lately, Taurus factory service has been taking several months, & they don't always fix the problem. And, the trigger pull is so heavy some women can't fire them DA.

Gander Mountain has some fine used guns.Bet if you have one near you.You'll find something you want.maybe a new Taurus. 0 -
Get yourself a used S&W model 13, or 581, or 19, these can all be had used for under the $400 mark and they will last a lifetime as long as they were not previously abused. 0 -
I have to say, as far as home defense is concerned, a pistol is not my choice. A short barreled shotgun, pump or semi-auto, 12 gauge loaded with something like #4 buckshot.
You have to consider the "heat-of-the-moment factor here. Trained police officers sometimes fail in a sticky situation, what is a common Joe going to do faced with an intruder? Scared to death, shaking at what is about to happen, and you're going to aim a pistol properly and effectively?
I have always maintained, just the sound racking a pump into battery, is enough to turn most away in a hurry. Someone is going to get messy!
Now if I had to choose a pistol, it would be a double action revolver.0 -
A pistol in my pistol safe can be my only choice as I have teenagers and kids in my house ALL the time and they are curious......yes my kids know and respect guns, it's thier friends that force the issue. 0 -
Wayne Shaw gave the same answer I would give UNLESS you have been trained on the use of a pistol and have had to fire a firearm under stress "military active duty " etc. Believe me NOTHING gets a bad guys attention like a shuck ada shuck of a pump shotgun it is a UNIVERSAL language. NOT best choice for Carry weapon but for home protection you have two hands on it & is harder to take it away from you. 0 -
As a retired Fed and ex Army Para, I have a 12 gauge Mossberg 500 18" with pistol grip next to the bed loaded with 00 buck. Dry-wall is cheap! 0 -
First choice is a shot gun for all the reasons mentioned. My first shot gun was an 870, and that was in the 50's (1950 that is) Second choice is a good used Smith, or Ruger. You couldn't give me a Taurus, and my smith won't even work on them any more. What ever you get, shoot the crap out of it, so you can do it in the dark. HAWKSHAW 0 -
If you're fixed on the revolver, there's already a lot of good advice here. I throw my hat in with the shotgun crowd, though. My answer to keeping it locked up but accessible was an AOW, in a quick access wall safe. Not sure if an 18" barrel pistol grip would fit. It's 13x20 inside, maybe if it sat at an angle?

Try walking through a house with a shotgun and see how easy it is, especially around corners.
Also, shooting a pistol gripped shotgun can be brutal.0
