M1 Carbine experts???

Hey, My cousin is asking me about an M1 carbine he has. I'm thinking it's not original.

It says Postal Meter on it. It has a paratroopers stock on it. It also says RIA and has EB underneath the RIA.

He said something about a B with a circle around it on the handle.

Any ideas on what this thing is? His dad brought it back from overseas. I'll get more information on it later on but if someone could spread some light on it or tell me where to go to check. Maybe let me know what I need to ask him about it in order to find out what it is.

update: he sent me this information. Bear in mind, he's not very familiar with this thing. The pictures he sent aren't very good so I'm not even going to bother posting them. Maybe someone can make some sense of it. Thanks again for any input.

Ok, writing that is on it is right above the handle inside a little square box it says RIA and right below it also in the box it says EB. No actually on the handle, the side opposite of the chamber pull-back, There is a B inside of a small circle. On top behind the hind sight, it says Postal Meter and the number under it is 42486xx. on the top when the chamber lever is pulled back it shows U.S. Carbine CAL.30 MI. Down towards the end of the barrel, there is a piece of metal with a little metal piece that is used for the carrying strap, it says AMCO. On the right side of the hind sight assembly there are two letters PI. The stock is folding as you know.

    The Carbine might be original but not to that stock,i think it was Underwood that was the only maker of the paratrooper carbines or was it Inland,i think it was Inland,boy its hell getting old.

    Oh well - you're not that far gone. [;)] It was only Inland that manufactured paratrooper models. Question is - does he have a RI gun in an original para stock or an aftermarket stock. The stock alone is worth some big bucks.

    Edit - didn't want to use a post to correct, I "mistyped" RI (for Rock Island) instead of Postal Meter.

    What's a RI gun and how could it be one if it says Postal Meter? Thanks for the input guys

    Rogue rob: there's original, then there's original original. Let me explain..

    You wouldn't mind a fully restored '55 Chevy, I'm sure. What you have in the carbine may be an authentic (non civilian) arsenal reconditioning. They would (Rock Island Arsenal) have dumped a NPM action into an Inland stock, without recourse as to who made what, so long as it left the armory in "as new" condition.

    So, don't be too quick to dismiss the rifle as being bogus. Almost all authentic US carbines have gone through an arsenal "tuneup" at some point in time prior to release from government property. Best, Joe

    ALL folding stock carbines were made by Inland(of General Motors.) There were only +/- 140000 made.
