Ammo help

I just bought a new scope and ammo for my 270. When i went to sight my rifle, my ammo (270 winchester super x) was actually 30-06 ammo. I checked the box again and the box was 270 how could this happen? Also what would have happened if i tryed to shoot this? Thanks David

    Hello,

    So is the 5.45x39 a .308?
    what does the 7.62x51 match up with?
    also what about the 7.62x54 does it match up with any other caliber??

    dav1965, your kidding, right? if your not kidding then, no, 30-06 ammo will not work in a .270

    I loaded it in the gun it went in fine but when i went to close the bolt it closed kind of hard thats when i took a closer look and noticed the problem. I know you cant interchange the bullets but i was close to having a very bad day.

    The bolt should not have closed with that combo. However it would ( and has) worked the other way many times with no ill effects. If you bought your ammo in a store where everyone (customers) has access to it then this is probably where it got switched.

    Was it reloaded using 30-06 brass ?

    If the 270win chambered and barreled rifle had fired a 30cal bullet one of several things might have happened. One the bullet might have swaged itself down to the smaller caliber and exited the barrel giving a massive recoil. Two, the rifle might have blown up it your face with gun gas going out the various ports, tossing parts and stock everywhere. But with the locking lugs holding the bolt closed. I have seen this happen once and this isn't the kind of fun anyone wants to ever have. Third and worst case is where the bolt lets go and comes straight back into your face and you are dead. I'm sure there are other possibilities but these three are what come to my mind first. Always use the right ammo....

    How??? Most likely some dillwad customer switched them in the store. They probably also have a box of 30-06 sitting on the shelf with 270Win rounds in it.

    There has to be more to this than what you've related to us.

    You shouldn't be able to close the bolt on a .30-06 cartridge in the .270 chamber. I don't care how strong you or the rifle is, the neck diameters are so different that you can't NORMALLY get a .30-06 cartridge case to fit in the .270 neck in the chamber.

    SAAMI states that the .30-06 case neck diameter is 0.340" while the .270 Win. neck is 0.308" in diameter. Allowing for case neck expansion in the chamber, you're still forcing 0.027" of neck into the smaller chamber.

    I think you need to do some critical measuring in order to establish what you really have and then take the ammunition back to the store where it was purchased.

    As far as the cartridge itself is concerned the 270 and the 3006 are the same except for the neck/bullet size. There must be alot of freebore in that 270 to allow that 30-06 to chamber! And the bullets must have been seated fairly deep.That's the only way I can figure that the 06 ammo could have chambered. If he would have fired that gun one of two things would have happened: the intense pressure would have at a minimum buldged the barrel or more likely have blown the barrel apart. He probably would have created pressures in the 100000s as the bullet would have been trying to conform to the much smaller diameter of that .277 barrel.

    I had the reverse scenario happen to me a few years back. I was shooting with my 06 and a few rounds of 270 went down the barrel. No harm/no foul (other than bad fouling). But it made me wiser to check twice when I'm out with people/friends/stangers and grabbing from "the ammo cache" when shooting.

    glockman - The freebore of the 270 is only .277. It's called freebore because there's no rifling there. A 270 bullet will slide in there with no force, but a .30-06 sure won't.
