Which power scope for 223
I have a Rem VSSF 223 heavy barrel varmit rifle in 223 and wanted to install a Leupold 6.5-20x VX-3 long range target scope with side focus, but I have found a much better deal on the exact same scope in 8.5-25 power, everything else the same. All of my shooting is from the bench or bipod. My current range is only 100 yards but I will be shooting at longer ranges in the future. My question: would the higher power of the 8.5-25 scope be a significant problem at 100 yards? Thanks.

Huh? 8.5X is not too much for 100 yards, that is the point of a variable.
Actually, 25X is not too much for a benchrest at any range and will be ok from a bipod with a little practice.

Hawk-I'm pretty new to scopes, since I retired and found this board, I ask questions, get great answers, then go out and buy the gun. I always used iron sights, but now need a scope and I'm new at it. Leupold increaded their prices a lot in the last year and I found the higher power scope in the "old model" for hundreds less than the lower power "new" model..everything is the same. I mounted a older 3x9x40 Leupold vari x on my 223 Ruger #1 and it does fine for all my target and varmint shooting. I keep my shooting inside 300yds and small critters at 300yds are are pretty small viewing but still very hittable. When something pops up at 50yds it sure is nice to be able to dial down to 3 or 4 power. And unless I have a very good rest and a heavy rifle 20+ power isn't all that easy to hold still, at least for me these days.... 0 -
aap...I think what the spirit of the responses mean is that 8X is OK if the 100yd you mentioned is the shortest range you plan on shooting. You can "dial up" for the longer ranges. Less than 100yd would be impractical. Best, Joe 0 -
I like HIGH POWER glass, so my answer is that is a perfect varmint scope. I don't have any problem finding targets up close with 25x,..and the side focus will aid in fast focusing to make the shot. 0 -
Thats what I was concerned about, but if you guys don't thng that having 8.5x as the lowest setting is too much, then I will buy the 8.5-25X. 0 -

Great info; I was offered the Leupold 8.5-25X Long Range Target with side focus, 30mm maintube and 50mm objective with fine duplex for $699 which was the best deal that I could find. I was actually looking for the 6.5-20X in the same scope, but would have to pay almost $200 more for the lower power scope. I was concerned that even at the lowest setting (8.5X) that this might be too powerful for my small rifle range which is barely 100 yards. 0 -
