Smith Wesson Model 36

Found a pistol today at the gun store. Smith Wesson Model 36 .38 2" barrel. The end of the barrel has some blueing missing due to some holster wear. There are a few tiny spider scratches and the cylinder looks good. Also it feels tight and the grips are original. Inside the frame, it reads 36 (no dash). Serial number 594xxx. No diamond grips. The owner is asking $395 for it. No papers or box included.

I'm guessing this would be mid 60's model, maybe 1965?

Can anyone here tell me what they think about the price and do you know any info on its manufacturing year?

    I would say that is a little high considering you can get new stainless ones (or similar variation) for around 450.00. They are nice guns but if they don't lower the price I would say walk away.

    1965 sounds about right for manufacture date. Definately after 1962 and prior to 1967. It should have diamond grips.

    Without pictures, the $395 sounds Ok for the description you give.

    offer him 375 and see what happens,I just got one at 375 very good shape.

    He's asking a little too much, but you can't go wrong with the S&W 36. I had one stolen in 1975 and it was recovered in 1989. A little surface rust was about all the damage done. 000 steel wool and a good cleaning and it was as good as new (well almost.)

    I agree about being a bit high,but these days it's a sellers market it seems.If you like it,buy it and don't look back,just enjoy it.It's not horribly overpriced ,imho

    I've seen new J frames around $399,from honest sellers, Fin, Feather, Fur, in Ohio being one such dealer.

    There aren't too many honest sellers around my way (North Carolina). The owner will not come down off the $395. I've been looking at all the nearest gun shops and called around. I've seen brand new ones in the box with papers for $595. And most of the used ones I have seen are late model 70's and they are $400 and up.
