Does acetone mess up blueing? I always use Kroil oil what would be the benifit of useing acetone over kroil oil. Thanks David

    acetone will not harm bluing... stock finish is another story. acetone is a solvent (a very volitile one) while kroil is a penetrating oil.

    As Mike stated, acetone is a powerful solvent. It will not harm bluing or browning, but it will very quickly destroy the finish on your stocks.

    When cleaning 100+ years of oil, grease, gun powder, or any other residue that is gumming up the internals or the the action of on old Winchester, I give them a 30-minute soak in acetone... in most cases, it completely disolves everything that is not supposed to be on the metal surfaces.

    Prior to disassembling an old Winchester, I first remove the stocks, then apply Kroil to every screw or pin I intend to remove, let it soak for 24-hours, then I strip the action to the maximum extent possible. After stripping it down, I then soak everything in acetone, scrub them with a nylon bristle brush if needed, wipe clean, then apply a very light coat of lightweight gun oil.
