interchangable casings.

ive never done this but another thread got me wondering. with casing being necked down to various calibers(308,243,7mm08)(30/06, 25/06, 270)what if anything would happen if you shot the smaller diameter bullet through a gun chambered for the parent cartridge. like shooting a 243 through a 308?? would it just be totally inaccurate or would this be a problem for you and your rifle?

    The combinations you list would not be dangerous, they just make you look foolish. But there are combinations that will wreck the gun.

    30-06 is the parent of a .308. .308's can be easily be fired in a 30-06 although it probably should not be routinely done, only as an emergency measure.

    But the parents to both of those are the 7&8mm Mauser (and by extension, all cartridges that use a .473/12mm rim diameter).

    In a lot of these cases the shoulder location or angle is altered, normaly this is done to prevent "cross chambering" of the various cartridges in the family.
    Also, to add to your lists, there is also the 25Souper, 260Rem and 338Federal (and 358Win??) in the 308Win family, and in the -06 family there is the 6mm-06, 6.5-06, 280Rem/7mmRem Express (same thing), 8mm-06, 338-06, 35Whelen and 400Whelen. I'm probably forgetting some of the others in those 2 families
