Hi everyone and Happy Easter
Gunshow in Syracuse Ny next weekend and I'm looking to add to my collection. I was thinking about the Swedish Mauser, Swiss K31 and the German K98, but lately i have been thinking of the m1917, m1903 and m1903a3 and maybe a P14. I already have a Garand, and a #4mk1 & #5mk1 so 303Brit and 30-06 I am already reloading for. I love to collect to look at and appreciate the history of these fine rifles, but i also love to shoot them as well. I remember around 5 years ago, M1917s were only slightly more the the LE#1's & #4's, you could get a nice one for $175 - $200. Not anymore. All things being equal,(price, condtion, etc.) what would you guys be looking for and why?, just trying to refine my search. I understand the Swede and the k31 are very accurate and have great quality and etc. But you guys with the 1917 & 1903's, what do you like about them and what dont you like???. You were born 50 years too late.
In the categories you are interested in, the odds of finding a nice rifle at a reasonable price at any gun show are pretty slim. If you are knowledgeable about what you are looking at (or take an expert friend with you), you have a chance. You should be able to get a decent Mosin-Nagant for < $100, or a Yugo SKS for < $200, but these are the safest buys.
If you want a M1903, you can get a decent shooter from the Civilian Marksmanship Program for < $500.
You can get some good buys on the GB auctions. I recently bought this 1903A3:

Yep in the 50's, 60's and earl 70's the guns you want were a dime a dozen. Now they can be anywhere from 700-1000 bucks in good original condition.
Mosin Nagants, Yugo Mausers, Yugo SKS, are all pretty easy to get cheap still.0 -
Why look at acquiring a WW-2 Japanese T-99 Arisaka? Due to the many variations brought by the hardships of wartime production, these are very interesting rifles. The odds are very good that any one you acquire will have actually been battle used. And the early to mid war (1940-43) produced rifles are good shooters. Ammo is not as hard to get as it used to be and if you reload, you've got it made.
You should be able to pick up a decent Mumed & matching for $300. to $500.0 -
Yeah, like i said i know that i will spend some money.....i almost have to laugh at the way prices have jumped. I used to see 1917's under $200 and decent Lee enfields were between $100-$150. Based on price increases my 1944 Longbranch(in beautifull shape)which is an awsome shooter(I won a small local competition with it) would be worth >$500, I've seen some on GB for $$800 range....bought mine 6 yrs ago for $135 tax included. I thought about another Garand,but i dont really want multiples till i have more of a range. But, i really like the feel of the 03's and the 1917 feels really good(seems to fit me better than the 03's) guess i'll just have to see whats at the show and what the prices are, I'll pay $500-$700 and be Ok with that, though $350 would be better[:D]. 0 -
cant go wrong with investing in a authentic p14 or 1917, the swede k31 is another one I'd think will go up in value. If you could find a enfield made by savage with all the numbers matching, that'd be another good one. 0 -

Days of the sub-$200 Yugo SKS rifles are gone, probably permanently in this Obama era. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find ANY functional SKS rifle for under $200 now, unless its beat-to-crap.
But Mosin rifles are still available for under $100 in "re-arsenaled" condition, meaning externally refinished, but variable condition bores. Usually these come with accessory kits including sling, cleaning rods, etc.0
