223/224 ?

I have an old Rem 722 in 222 and a Win 43 22 Hornet. I'm gathering up some reloading "stuff" and wonder if I would have to get both diameter bullets?

  .224 bullets can be used in both the .222 Rem and .22 Hornet.

  The 722 has a .224 bore diameter, and depending on what year the model 43 is, you might want to have the barrel slugged to find the measurements. I know some of the earlier ones were .223 diameter. If you load .224 diameter bullets in it, you can raise the pressures.

  Agree with TSR, and would add that you are likely to be stripping a fair amount of jacket into the rifling on that 'ol 43 as well.

  I use the .223's in the older 23D, 19H, etc. and .224's in the more recent ones.
  
  Here's what Speer says in their 1962 loading manual:
  
  "For the most part, the Hornet rifles do better with bullets measuring .223 than with the larger .224 bullets. Heavier bullets may be used in the Hornet but if one does, velocity must of necessity drop off."
  
  I'm just adding this to Laredo Lefty's comment. No more information, just saying that He, I and Speer know what we're talking about.

  Mr. Studebaker,
  
  You have two mighty fine shoot'en-arns.
  
  The hornet is an excellent 100/150 yard small game hunting rifle.
  
  The Rem 222 (triple duce) is an excellent varmit rifle with light bullets (55 gr. & below) out to about 300 yards. It will also do for larger (coyote) varmits with heavier bullets.
  
  Point being, both rifles have their own 'ideal' range & velosity. To get good performance from either, you will need to pick a bullet brand, style, & weight for your intended use for that gun. If your objective is just to make the things go "BANG", buy factory ammo.
  
  Now for your question "will I have to get both diameter bullets?"
  
  Consider all the variables in bullets;
  
  diameter, weight, profile (flat nose, spire, boat tail, etc.) material (cast, jacket, solid, ?) & the list goes on & on.
  
  If you can find two totally different cartridges as you have & control only one variable to make both 'optimum' in performance, you truly are an 'expert'.
