i just saw in another post about being able to get an inserts to change cases in similar cartdridges. ive seen adds for an insert to go from a 30/06 to a 308? do these things really work? is the rifle still going to be accurate?

The device that enables a 308 to chamber correctly in a 30-06 is a "sleeve", that is supposedly to be permanently installed in the 30-06's chamber. It is not supposed to be removable. Once the sleeve is installed correctly, the rifle can no longer chamber and fire 30-06 ammo.

Chamber inserts are a completely different form of device. They are removable. Generally they enable specific rifles to fire either pistol cartridges or 22 L.R. ammo, in rifles of the same caliber.

For the most part yes, they work. Although I'd limit use to bolt action and single shot rifles/pistols.

Accuracy may or may not degrade. Since the chamber insert usually takes a longer round and allows use of a shorter round there is a longer jump from cartridge mouth to rifling and that is generally not good for accuracy. Also, the insert may not be prefectly lined up with the bore. Again, not good for accuracy.

I had a 30 Carbine insert for a 308 Winchester T/C Encore barrel, I wanted to do some cheap plinking with it but accuracy was pretty lousy. So I'm currently trying to find a T/C barrel specifically in 30 Carbine, will probably order from one of the custom makers.

There are adapters that are removable, that allow you to fire 7.62x39 in a 308 or 30-06. Or 308 in a 30-06, depending on which insert you buy. And many other combos, go here and scroll down:

I read the add in your link. Don't see how the .308 adapter could be removed from the 30-06 chamber with a broken shell extractor though, as the body & neck diameters of the .308 & 30-06 is the same. There will have to a special tool made/utilized to get the .308 adapter out of the 30-06 chamber. He should be more specific/honest in his add, regarding this.

The US Navy converted thousands of M1 rifles to 7.62 mm NATO using a chamber insert. They expected the inserts to stay in place by tight tolerances & friction, & it seemed to work ---- for a while. At some point, the insert would be extracted with a fired case, rendering the rifle useless until it made a trip to the armorer. I haven't seen these inserts on the market for some time, but they may still be out there. I'm not sure when epoxy was invented; maybe that would work.

Their next attempt at conversion was to contract for tens of thousands of new barrels chambered in 7.62 mm NATO. This actually worked quite well, although the M1 rifle was soon declared obsolete.

About 25+ years ago I bought one of the inserts from Idaho Surplus Sales to shoot .308 in one of my Garands. It was advertised to be removable with a broken shell extractor to go back to shooting 30-06.

Well, after using it for some .308 shooting for which it worked fine, I could not get it out of the chamber. It was basically fire-formed to the chamber. I had to take the gun to a gunsmith and have the insert reamed out.

I threw it away and bought my first Springfield M1A for my .308/7.62 shooting.

As rufe-snow referred to, I used to have a steel adapter that allowed shooting of a pistol round (maybe .32 auto?) in the '06. Accuracy, as I recall, was poor. The insert is long gone and not missed.
Then, of course, there's the Pederson device, but I've only seen one, and that in a museum.

I had a MAS 36 with a 7.62x39mm chamber insert in it that is a fun little plinker. I had to put a spacer in the magazine and get soem spare parts to make a shorter follower and spring. But it WAS hella cheaper to shoot until the Obama ammo rush.

Not sure what you mean, but it works just fine. I use one to shoot 7.62x39 out of my .308. The adapter is basically like the front of a 308 case without the head on it, just like a broken case would be. The broken shell extractor works on the adapter just like it does on a real broken shell.

I'm specifically referring to the adapter used to fire .308 ammo in 30-06 chambers, not the 7.62 X 39 adapter used in .308 chambers.

Kindly refer to the previous post by Laredo Lefty regarding his experience with the .308 adapter in the 30-06 chamber.

As the .308 and 30-06 have the same body and neck diameters there is very little "meat" for the .308 broken shell extractor to expand and grab on to, to remove the adapter from the 30-06 chamber. The difference in length between them is approximately 1/2 inch. If the adapter has been epoxyed in and expanded to fill the chamber through firing, your very apt to encounter the same problems L.L. had, getting it out.
