Drill & Tap a Marlin 81 Tubeloader

Am considering acquiring a Marlin 81 tubeloader and was wondering if anyone has had this done to one of these older models.A year or so ago Marlin offered a D&T service for older Marlins but has since discontinued the service.I am sure it has been done all along by various gunsmiths.Any comments?

  Drilling and tapping a rifle for scope mounts is a standard job for a competent smith. Mine charges me $35 to D&T, and mount the base, rings, and scope. Your mileage may vary.

  I have an old, heavy, single shot Savage .22.
  
  It's a pretty junky gun that I don't think I've shot in thirty years.
  
  Any thoughts/opinions/experience about re-chambering it to .22 WMRF ??
  
  It's a really long barrel. Anyone know the most ballistically efficient lenghth for that cartridge ??
