hornet bullets

Question I found two boxes of 45gr. Hornet bullets.There marked 223. dia. instead of 224.dia. where they made for and older gun or will they work in a newer gun like a sako M 73. thanks for any information.

    Many older rifles that were chambered for 22 hornet ranged anywhere from converted 22 LONG RIFLE firearms to then current production factory chambered 22hornet rifles and many had 221-223 bore diameter. later rifles were all made with .224 bore . I would not shoot a .223 in a modern 22-250 or 220 swift as it might strip in the rifling but at 22 Hornet pressures it will not hurt to try and see how they shoot. Your mileage may vary

    I have a Hornet on a Winchester Lo wall action having a Springfield M1922-22LR barrel. It's happy with 223 Spire points and doesn't like 224 bullets.

    Your Sako should use .224 bullets. I am interested in the .223's. Let me know what you want for them. If we can come up with an agreable price you can list it with a buy it now price that we agree on.

    Does, as you suspect, tend to be a trifle less accurate in the newer guns like your Sako. I use a 40 grain Sierra varminter hollow point set back as far as I can go without leaving a gap at the case neck newar the ogee over a full case of Lil Gun. Scary accurate out of my 'ol Savage 342. If it were older than about WWII, I would be (after sluggung, of course)using the 223's in any Hornet chambered gun.

    In the 1962 Speer manual number 5 they say " For the most part, the Hornet rifles do better with bullets measuring .223 than with the larger .224 bullets. Heavier bullets may be used in the Hornet but if one does, velocity must of necessity drop off."

    I found that my ruger likes the 223 more than the 224.I do have alot of problems reloading it though. The damn cases are so thin. I have crushed many O necks.I finnally figured out what I was doing wrong thanks to the guys here on this forum. Id love to start a hornet forum. Seems there are alot of guys that like that round.
