Winchester Proof Stamp?

On the Winchester Model 12's I often see a proof stamp on the receiver and directly across on the barrel. If the two stamps do not line up does this mean the barrel is from another shotgun. Should the proof stamps lineup to indicate original barrel and receiver.

    on barrrels with an original solid rib the proofmark on the barrel will be offset to show proofmark . if your gun has no rib wait for Bert or others here who have seen many model 12's

    Do the serial numbers on the receiver and the barrel assembly match? That is how you would ordinarily determine an original barrel and receiver. Usually, the proof marks are stamped in-line with one another except when a barrel has a factory installed rib. What vintage gun were you looking at?
