.357 cylinder info

Hello,
Would anyone know how I can get a cylinder for a COLT Trooper .357 magnum?
I have this since my dad passed away. My mother made him get rid of the cylinder when we were kids. (45 years ago)!
I purchased a beautiful cylinder from a .357 colt trooper MKlll. There is some sort of difference between those two guns, as the MKlll cylinder is JUST too big. Wont seat into the body past 1/2 way.
Any knowledge on these differences would be a great help. In addition, if anyone has a correct cylinder for this Id be interested.

    what a coincidence, a friend lost his COLT Trooper .357 magnum in the area around Convict Lake in Commiefornia while deer hunting, if you find it, it's yours !!

    If you're talking about the Old Model Trooper it also takes a Python cylinder - you sure Colt can't get one for you? The OM Trooper is basically the plain Jane (and slightly older version) of the Python. The cylinder you bought is I'm assuming made for the Trooper Mk III which is an entirely different gun.

    If you can locate a Python cylinder I'd presume 1) it ain't cheap and 2) the finish probably won't match the Trooper all that well. In any event, the cylinder will probably have to be fitted to the gun. If you don't have the crane you'll need one of those also of course.

    I'm not certain, but a Colt OM Match 38 Special cylinder might fit? Again, not sure - perhaps someone else can provide specifics on that. And of course you'd be limited to using 38 Specials only.

    Its too bad your dad didnt leave a map to where he put the cylinder. I would bet that he never really got "rid" of it but hid it where your mom would not find it.

    There is no point in asking Colt; they do not stock parts for guns no longer being manufactured.

    While a used Python might fit your gun, there is no point investing in one unless you have an original Trooper crane, & that may be even more difficult to find. (Try www.poppertsgunparts.com .)

    Just keep checking the online auctions every week; if you don't see what you need in a year or 2, maybe just part out YOUR gun. It has no value if you can't shoot it.

    Put colt cylinders in the search. A guy named johnantique had a post,back in Jan. asking about some Colt 357 cylinders he has.

    Take the gun plus cylinder to a good gunsmith who does lathe and milling machine work. He can analyze why and where the cylinder and gun frame don't fit and what would be required to make them fit.
    It could be very simple and inexpensive to do.
    It sounds from your description that the barrel-cylinder gap needs to be increased by filing the barrel's breech end or facing off the cylinder front.
    I would question that radical differences exist between these cylinders or a need for a new crane.
