S&W help?

Hey guys
A friend of mine at work is trusting me with his uncle's police revolver he passed down to him.
I'm trying to find out the model and date for him. (and I know one of you S&W brainiacs can hep me!)

Serial # is 2853x.
6" bbl, blue, .38 special stamped on bbl. No model # on it anywhere.

I took it apart 'cause the thing was locked up tight when I got it. I got it bsck together (nothing but an unscrewed ejector rod binding it up!), and I gotta tell you. This thing has an action that feels like butter! About a 2 lb. trigger break in single action and what feels like @ 7 lb. in double. He's gonna be tickled it works. Imma hate giving this thing back...

    Assuming its a Smith & Wesson that serial number indicates its an M&P Hand Ejector made about 1902-1903.

    Smith didnt start using model numbers until 1957 so it would not have one.

    Does it look like the top gun in this pic?

    That's the one... Just not quite in as good a shape as your sample there!

    Mike, Your welcome. The M&P (Military & Police) revolvers saw a lot of use by Law Enforcement in the early part of the 20th century.

    Many were exported to other countries like my 4", the middle gun in the pic, it has a lanyard ring on the butt (hard to see) and the back strap is stamped "RHKP" for (Royal Hong Kong Police).

    They had the notch rear sight instead of the adjustable type. The M&P Hand Ejectors later became the model 10 in 1957. This model was introducted in 1899 and is still made by S&W today.

    That ejector rod should be lightly staked into the keyslot groove of the ejector shaft with a pointed punch so it wont unscrew and jam up the cylinder.
