Harrington Richardson Handy Gun

Whats the deal with these firearms? I looked at a 410 with 2 1/2" chamber, 8" barrel the other day. Are these considered a class 3 weapon? Have to have a tax stamp in order to legally own?

    Yes- because they are a smoothbore PISTOL. Unlike the Judge revolver, which has rifling. However, the H&R is not a short barreled shotgun ($200 tax) but are an Any Other Weapon- AOW ($5 tax) But yes, they are an NFA Class III firearm. They never had a stock, were made as a handgun only. Ithaca Auto and Burglars Gun is in same class, as is the Marble GameGetter.

    If someone was to obtain an old Handy gun is it possible to get it registered or would it have to be turned over?

    The word I got from the ATF- if an EXISTING class III weapon has never been papered, then under MOST circumstances it cannot BE papered. FWIW, and this is just one man's opinion- if you should find something like this while cleaning out the old trunk in Grandad's attic- turn it over to YOUR attorney, have YOUR attorney contact BATFE. They can search- if it has been papered, it can be transferred, if not, attorney can surrender it to BATFE- who will destroy it. With papers, a Handi-gun with the short barrel, is worth $500-$1000 depending on condition. Without papers, it is worth 10 yrs, and a $250,000 fine.
