Gun storage
I have recently retired. Plan on spending my winters in Florida. My guns will be staying in upstate NY in my gun safe. Will I have a problem with my guns being stored in the unheated safe for the winter? There will be no heat in the house. Would appreciate any input.

What is the best thing to apply to your guns that are going to be stored in a safe for awhile and not be used? I was thining of using Rem oil? But was wondering if something works better. YOU GUYS ARE HITTING THIS RIGHT ON THE HEAD. SOME OF THESE GUNS WILL ONLY GET WIPED DOWN ONCE A YEAR. I HAVE A FAIRLY LARGE COLLECTION AND WOULD LIKE TO THINK TWICE A YEAR. BUT TO BE REALISTIC. SOME MAY SEE ONCE A YEAR. SO I'M LOOKING FOR THE BEST.

There is nothing wrong with storing handguns in their original boxes. I have many of mine stored that way. The guns I have bought without boxes I store in the padded zipper gun rugs.
I also have dessicant packs spread around the interiors of my safes. They help to keep the humidity down. Also available are electric de-humidifiers that constantly run inside safes.0 -
Never store a gun in a rug long-term. They can cause rust. 0 -
Bill ....... The handguns I store in gun rugs have been in them for years with zero rust. I use the zipper gun rugs made of foam and breathable fabric. Guns are wiped clean and dry before storing.
If you leave moisture or fingerprints on a gun they can rust sitting out in the open.0 -
I also store hand guns in nylon gun rugs, never on fleece or leather, and zero problems, though I do live in the desert.
Long guns get stored in Bore Stores, siliconized and more breathable than fleece (I presume you are not using real fleece, but a synthetic?). Again, nothing wrong with storing guns in the original box. Obviously the manufacturers and dealers store them that way! I like to keep mine that way, if possible.
The problem isn't with gun rugs, its with fleece. Foam rubber tends to protect guns.
But fleece can absorb moisure, then hold it against the gun for long periods of time, promoting rust.
*IF* you know there is no humidity *AND* the gun is well-oiled, then you'd probably be OK in a gun rug. But I think its better to avoid them, if possible.
You can get reasonable aftermarket pistol cases with "eggshell" type universal foam interiors for around $10-15 each, and IMO they're better then gun rugs since they are hard (ie more impact resistant) and you can also put accessories in there.0 -
I stored a rifle in a case with plastic egg crate foam for several months. I ended with blocthed bluing on the barrel. After several months in a Borestore the blotching faded, but I will not store, or recommend anyone else store in egg crate foam again. 0 -
I too store hand guns in zippered cases UNZIPPED. Dehumidification always on and I wipe them inside and out once a year. No problems so far! 0 -
I keep mine in a safe without a dehumidifier> I was told a dehumidifier in a safe will draw all the moisture out of the stocks and cause them to dry out and crack. This came from a liberty safe guy. I dont know if it is true but I dont want to chance it. Does anyone have this problem with a dehumidifier rod in their safe??? 0 -

Tom, I bought a bunch of them at gun shows in my area. They are available in different sizes. When they get old, just toss them in the oven (non-microwave) heat them up to dry out and continue to use.
They have worked very well for me for years.0
