Reloaded 300 ultra mag ammo
I reload my own 300 ultra mag ammo and need to prove a point to a friend of mine. I use 165 gr Nosler Ballistic tip bullets and IMR 7828 powder. According to my Nosler reloading book I use 90gr of powder. My friend tries to pursuade me to load them "hot" and use 92 grains of powder claiming it will increase velocity. My argument is that this is not only unsafe but stupid. By logic, I see that this will decreas accuracy because there will be too much pressure in the casing and shorten the life of the case, lowering the amount of times I can reload it. My friend insists that 92 gr is fine and will only optimize the bullet performance. Please respond so he can see how dumb he is!!! Why do you need to optimize a 300 ultra mag anyways? Already a potent round as is!

Ummm, I shoot a 300RUM Improved AKA the 300 Tomahawk, so why not "optimize" it.
If you need more velocity, try some RL-25. Nosler is showing a gain of 143fps that way AND staying within SAAMI spec's.
As far as going "past book", it's not someplace for the kiddies to play, so if YOUR not comfortable going there, than don't do it.
On the flip side, your chamber is not the same as the one that Nosler used. Their chamber is cut to the absolute minimum spec and short(er) throated, and as such will develop pressure at lower charges (this is one way they insure that "stock" chambers will not have a problem with pressure at the same charge), so it's possible that your chamber could very well take another gr or 2 of powder without showing "pressure signs".0 -
Thanks for your input. I am pretty comfortable with the loads i have and found them more than adequate for the whitetails of wisconsin as well as a few russian boars. The 300's velocity and energy are incredible and don't really see a need for trying to push it to it's limits. I will probably try the rl 25 someday, we'll see! 0 -
The hotter u make the round the more dammage to your barrel, there is a point where you need to consider wether its worth a few more fps on an already blazing fast round. 0
