Bert H. 45-70 dies for loading 45-90?
Hello Bert, we just bought an 1886 45-90 made in 1892 from Stan Gates. I am looking for dies and was wondering if you know if we can use 45-70 dies to load 45-90? Thanks. Brian.

I'm curious about this also, altho I've had some folks speculate the opposite, that the 45-70 could be loaded with 45-90 dies. Wouldn't 45-70 dies be to short to size 45-90 brass the full length of the case? Don't know if there is enough adjustment in the dies for crimping either. Will watch this topic for replys also. I have no idea if it will work or not, but I suspect that it would not be a good idea. Why not just buy the 45-90 dies? Stan and I know each other quite well. 0 -
45-90 dies are just harder to find. I know that you can load 357's with 38 spl dies so it was a curiosity question more than anything. Stan and I talked for quite awhile. We were talking about Cody and I mentioned you and Stan said he knoew you prett well. Small world. I am hoping to get down to the Reno show and hopefully get a chance to meet you. Brian. 0 -

I load 9mm Largo and 9mm ACP and 9mm Super and 9mm Luger all on the same dies. I don't see why you coudln't do it with the 45/70 dies, but you may (or may not) only be able to neck size.
Another observation- in forming 8X57 Mauser from 30-06, I tried running the 06 case into the Mauser sizing die untrimmed- so 6mm more brass than per spec. The die had enough room to accomodate it all without crushing. For what its worth.
Edit to consider the next reply: That was exactly my point. I'm not saying for sure that a 45/90 shell will fit into a 45/70 die but in my experience of using longer cases in dies for shorter cartridges- for instance the 38 ACP in 9mm luger dies- it works.
In any case I don't see an issue with leaving some brass protruding; as was said, just back your dies off a few turns if the 45/70 won't take the full length. You won't get a full length size but assuming it is all fired in the same chamber it should be fine.0 -

The deal is that the 45-90 brass is longer. If the Die is to short, it will crush the case, and potentially screw up the 45-70 die. If you wish try it, and see what happens. Just be careful trying it, and if the case stops a 1/2" short in the sizer die, dont force it.

I do it with an old set of Lyman dies but you will need a crimping die in a seperate step..I use a Lee crimping die
