silencer ? for a air rifle pellet gun.

hello
i live in iowa and see there is an add in one of the magazines i read that they have a air rifle that has a silencer on it. would this still be considered illegal in the state of iowa?? i think it was like a gamo or something like that.

    Hello,
    I've seen the ads with the air rifle with the "silencer" on it as well,but it is actually a compensator for the gun and not a silencer.I'm not aware of any airguns that would need a silencer since most are not very loud to begin with.Hope this helps.

    I have seen thes, too, and there was a write not long ago in Shotgun News. They seemed to feel that it had somewhat of an effect on report but also stated that it did not and would not do anything about the sonic report of the pellet going thru the air. I could be wrong but I believe the small print of silencer regulations would pertain to a firearm, which an air rifle, by definition, I don't believe is. However, local regs such as a city ordinance might or might not trump that.

    Had one on my Beeman R-1 (sold it recently on the forum).
    Looked cool (I guess. If you like that sort of thing.) and made a decent "handle" for cocking the rifle; which seemed to be it's main function. Couldn't tell any difference in report with or without. Had no slots or ports; just an aluminum tube with deeply machined grooves.

    Gamo claims that their integral suppressor reduces noise by 52%, & I have no reason to dispute their claim.

    ATF has ruled that a "device" that reduces the sound of a pellet gun or paintball gun IS an NFA item. However, the folks at Gamo are not stupid; they have a determination letter stating that their suppressed pellet gun is not an NFA item. I haven't seen the letter, but would guess that the reasoning is that their suppressor is integral to the gun, & pellet guns are not regulated by federal law.

    State firearms laws can be more restrictive than federal law, so it would be wise to make sure that possession is legal in your state.

    I am the proud owner of the "noise suppressed" Gamo whisper. They work very well if you don't go supersonic with some pellets. The noise gets redirected and it doesn't seem like it is quieter if you are the shooter. I let my wife touch off a few rounds as I stood about 35 yds away and to her left. Barely knew she shot. Great for leaning out and clobbering tree rats that have caused damage to my home and my peach crop. I purchased the rifle to avoid a citation for drilling the little varmints. I find it an "essential" when faced with neighbors that feed and encourage propagation of the species. They also would love to turn one in for the violation of the city ordinance. That penalty can be severe in my home town.
