    i have been into guns for over 50 years and never heard of a "Dark" BBL.

    do you know how to search Google or Dog Pile ???????

    also, are you hitting the proper keys on your keyboard ?

    "Dark barrel" probably means bore is rusted, pitted, at best merely filthy. Opposite of "shiny, mint, mirror" bore.

    What it means is, the bore is in bad shape.

    Dark Barrel- The barrel probably has been abused by not cleaning after shooting with corrosive ammunition. It has a dull matte look to the bore, instead of a brite shining look. Some of us say it is frosty, like the frost on a frosted mug. It might shoot ok, or it might not...if you dare to try. Best to stay away from.

    Exactly what it sounds like.

    Instead of being nice and bright and shiny, the barrel is dark in color when you shine a light in there and look.

    While a simply dirty barrel can appear dark, usually if the barrel is cleanable, the person selling it would have tried to clean it.

    So a "dark barrel" generally means some degree of corrosion, either from improper cleaning after firing corrosive ammo, or from general neglect/abuse.

    Note that some guns with dark barrels will actually shoot quite well. It doesn't *necessarily* mean the gun is ruined or can't be used, but its definitely not a good thing. Of course it *is* possible that a gun with a dark bore won't shoot well either.

    In some cases, it is possible to salvage the bore by using an abrasive and lapping. If it's smooth, the barrel might still shoot well but if left rough it will foul quickly and whatever accuracy it might have will go out the window.

    if its a surplus rifle,it means be careful buying.years ago i ordered a mosin nagant rifle in "very good condition,dark bores" having owned several already that were excellent shooters.the first bronze brush through it pushed out a little pile of rust,and i had a 60 dollar wallhanger.

    I like old Winchester 62's and 90's. There are two things I don't want to hear when I go to looking at one: It has a "dark barrel" or there is a "faint ring" (usaually followed by hardly noticeable) near the end of the barrel. I have found the ring, as the dark barrel, may or may not affect accuracy.

    A dark barrel means "dont buy me". a frosted barrel is a very early version of a dark barrel. These barrels are uniformly pitted, usually from corrosive ammunition so there's no shine left in them.
    I've classified thousands of Army rifle, pistol and 30 caliber automatic weapon barrels and frosting or dark bores wasn't grounds for declaring them unserviceable. As has been said, many are still accurate.
    As far as pitting goes, any barrel bright or dark having a pit extending across an entire land or groove was unserviceable according to Army regulation.

    soooooo.., what we once called a "cruddy bore", is now a "dark barrel"???
