used rifle definitions
I'm looking at used surplus rifles on this sight and I'm not clear as to "dark or black barrel with good rifling" as compared to "bright barrel" Any help would be good. Thanks John.

Many milsurp rifles currently on the market were fired with corrosive ammo, & weren't properly maintained. Your description sounds like a bore with heavy pitting, but no so extensive that the lands & grooves can't be seen.
Probably the guns they didn't buy would be described as "sewer pipes".
