An earlier post about a replica has me asking: Why would you need documentation to declare a replica is not a firearm? I don't see how a paper that says: 'This is not a firearm', would add any value or collectivity, but the poster seemed to set some store in it.

    I missed the original post you are referring to so I'm a little in the dark. However, I would GUESS that such a "paper" might be needed for legal reasons. For example, if someone lives in a jurisdication where firearms are not allowed (or heavily regulated) this would show that it is not a firearm and can be owned/transported without the restrictions of a firearm.

    You don't "need" a letter to prove that a replica isn't real, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have such a letter if for example you wanted to travel with the thing, say on an airplane, mail it somewhere, etc.

    It might also prove helpful if the gun in question were ever stolen or confiscated, for example.

    In this particular case, I think the Mp40 replica from the earlier post has extra value because its in good shape with the original box and paperwork.

    Having a letter from the ATF adds value for the above reasons, plus because any "official" documentation on any particular gun adds value to collectors items.

    In this case, maybe not a LOT of value, but a little bit.

    Given the choice between two identical replicas, one with such a letter and one without, which would you rather have?
