Savage 1895

GUTSS
This is one of the two rifles an elderly friend of mine would like to sell. I can't find much information on what this rifle would be worth. Can anyone help me out? Also, he asked me to get the rust off of it, would it be wrong to clean it up or should I leave it just as it is to sell it? Thanks.

    I would definitely not try to remove any of the rust, you might do more harm then good.

    I owned one of these for a short while and the only info I gathered was that it was produced as a short run of apx. 5000 guns by Marlin for Savage to be submitted to the Army for trials. there should be a marlin proof mark under the forearm. it is chambered for the 303 savage cartridge.obviously it the predecessor to the Savage model 99 Hope this helps

    All I can find out about the value seem's to make me believe it is worth around $800 but that is just my estimate, I don't know if I'm way off or not.

    Your post title says Savage 1895. Unless I'm mistaken, what you have there is an 1899 Savage. [:)]

    Yes you are mistaken, it is an 1895, the 1899 came out four years later. They made around 8000 of these and the first 4500 or so were made for Savage by Marlin, then Savage finished out the run. I'm just having a hard time determining what it's worth, they are not easy to find.[:)]

    Hello GUTSS,

    I would guess around $2500. At the very least you need to get some oil on it. If it were mine, I would remove the rust with some 0000 steel wool lubricated with some penetrating oil. Work carefully.

    Yep soak the hell out of the rust with some Kroil or Ballistol for a couple days and then try the steel wool.

    Hello GUTSS,

    The collector value has been destroyed-the walnut stocks appear to be
    well sanded and the screw slots are damaged. I have no idea what the bore condition is but the exterior is a mess. Suggest you start at
    a buck and hope for the best.
