Selling a pre-1968 unnumbered gun?

I have a Remington Model 66 Nylon that was made in 1963. Because it wasn't uncommon in those days to put no serial numbers on 22s, it doesn't have one. Normally, for that gun it would be on the barrel under the front sight. Can I sell this gun to someone in another state thru an FFL dealer? Its been a little while since I filled out Form 4473. AFAIK, there is no place on it for a serial number that the buyer fills in, but I think they have to have a serial number when the dealer calls in for background check. Thanks in advance for any info!

    I believe that, for pre-'68 rifles, no serial number is alright.

    Very common on older rifles and shotguns, I have had many myself both as a shooter and dealer.
    I simply enter "NO SERIAL NUMBER" in that box.

    Many, many rifles and shotguns made prior to 1968, were made legally without serial numbers. As they never had serial numbers, there should be no problem transferring them. If some retard gives you a hard time regarding the lack of serial number(s), find another dealer to do business with. Years ago I sold two unserialed Model 66's, through the auction with no problems.

    Whatever you do don't let the doofus put any kind of identification marking on the rifle. A lot of dealers are really running scared nowadays, with whats going on in this country. Their trying to cover their butts, over anything that might come back to bite them in the future. Over the years I collected, I had at least two valuable guns defaced this way, i.e. identifiction numbers scratched into them with either a electric pencil or a scriber.

    It does have a number stamped in red ink into the plastic receiver assembly under the cover, and in a pinch it might do. The metal receiver cover is detachable, so there's no sense in stamping anything into that.

    As the man said- until the 1968 Gun Control Act, there was not Federal requirement for serial numbers on rifles and shotguns. If they were there it is illegal to remove them, but no requirement for them in the first place.

    I collect Mossberg 22 rifles, most made in the 40's and 50's. Other than those made for the US Military, NONE of them have serial numbers.

    I list them in my bound book as "NSN"- no serial number.
