03-A3 Info.... Please.

My SIL has a Remington Arms 03-A3 barreled action. It has a 7 digit serial number, 38096XX. I seem to remember there were some actions that were deemed "unfit"(?) for modern loads or??? Anyway SOMETHING was wrong with actions that had high numbers or maybe it was low numbers. It also appears to have a 2 groove barrel well worn.
So, any info you Lads can impart will surely be appreciated.

    Remington produced '03's and 03A3's were not involved in the "unsafe numerical range" controversy. Please eliminate that aspect, as it doesn't pertain to Remington's. Best, Joe

    My recollection is that 03A3 and 03A4 models were late war production to begin with

    2 groove barrel...interesting. I'm not an 03 expert but my memory says 4 groove. Any pics?

    We shall act acordingly. One other thing I forgot to mention, right out on the top end of the barrel just above the muzzle it has the letters "R A" Which, I assume this stands for "Remington Arms". Right?

    You are correct, the RA stands for Remington Arms.

    2 + 4 groove Remington barrels were intermixed at the beginning of WWII, but by the end of the war most barrels were 2 groove as they proved to be as accurate as the 4 groove barrels.

    Not sure what "well worn" means. If you don't have gauges, stick a single round of USGI M2 ball .30-06 point first in the muzzle; if you can still see SOME copper jacket, then the barrel is probably usable.

    Of course, a barreled action needs SOMETHING done to make it usable. He might be able to find USGI wood, but, by the time he is done, it will cost as much as a complete rifle off the GB auctions.

    NO A3 or A4 had an unsafe low numbered receiver. Those were the early springfield and rock islands from WW1 on the base 03 model.

    The date on the end of the barrel is stamped ...3 44 . I assumed that meant March, 1944 but I thought they were making only Garands, Johnsons, Carbines, ? during that period. This is turning into quite a History lesson Thanks to you fellers. And just when I was SURE I knew it all! HA!

    Oh, and forgot...to nmyers..Sir, there are some pretty severe wear marks on the underside of the bolt. Even a nick or two as if someone gave it a lick or two witha hammer.
    I Haven't tried the bullet trick in the muzzle yet but will.
    The bolt works smoothly so the "wear" spots and nicks are meer cosmetics and nothing that some "TLC" can't cure.
