The best one is one that fits YOU and you can be accurate with. That is not the same for everyone. You will need to try several to see what fits YOU. Just cause brand X works for me does not mean it will work for YOU. There are some very good guns on the market that other people love but they dont fit me so even if they are the "best" gun in the world it is not the best gun for me.
I have been an true hater of compact pistols for a long time. I still stand by that fact as most are not really smaller the the full size and have many draw backs.
Now with that said I just bought a compact I like. I picked up a S&W M&P 9c. I have only put 200 rounds thought it so far but I like it a lot. I like it because it feels good and fits my hand amazingly. The sights line right up when I point it. I dont think it has anymore recoil then any of my full size guns do. It works for me because it fits me.
I will be doing a better review of it in a week or two when I get to really shoot it some more.

My preference is a Glock 19. You, however, should try several pistols to see which you can handle the most effectively.
There are ranges that rent pistols so you can get trigger time with different brands. Select one that you can operate quickly, accurately and comfortably.0 -

I like my Glock 26. Like other posters said, find something that fits YOU. The 26 fits my hands perfectly, so it is my preferred carry. I carry in a Fobus ankle holster, and also have an IWB for it. 0
