Browning A5 - Need opinions on value

I have a 1966 Browning A5, 12 gauge, 3" magnum, full choke, 32" barrel. It's only been shot 10-15 times and is in nrear pristine condition. There is one place on the under side of the barrel that has the blueing scratched off from where the gun was laid against a rusty barbed wire fence shortly after my Dad bought it.

I have no need for the gun and want to sell it. Below is a link to pictures on Photobucket, and I would appreciate someone's knowledgeable estimation for the gun's worth. The preliminary research I've done places the value at $800-$1400, but I need to narrow that range.

Also, I have a pristine condition Remington 1100, 12 gauge, 30" vent rib modified choke that I would like to sell as well.

    The barrel on the A5 is plain.

    I'd be very surprised if the A5 brings anywhere near 1000, more like 750 due to the plain barrel and full choke. The 1100 might bring 500

    Wow... sort of reverse of what I expected. I have to say, too, that I was surprised at how clean the 1100 was when I took it out for the pics yesterday... just didn't remember the condition very accurately from the last time I cleaned it a couple years ago.

    Why is it that the full choke reduces the A5's value?

    Plain barrel reduces the value.

    I understand that the plain barrel is less attractive, and therefore less valuable than a vent rib. However, golferboy426 quoted both the "plain barrel" and "full choke" being reasons for a lower value, and I just didn't understand how the choke would have that impact. After all, it depends on what the gun is being purchased for, doesn't it, as to whether or not the choke is a point of concern?

    The A5 12 Gauge Magnums were primarily goose and duck guns. The problem with the full choke barrel is that they don't digest non-lead shot well. That means the original barrel isn't too useful for water fowl. I've used mine a few times for pheasants but those guns are pretty heavy and I switched to something lighter after a few fields. There are a few options on the barrel; find a Japanese one with screw in chokes or have screw in chokes installed on the original barrel (which is what I did with mine) or find an original barrel with more open choke. If you're intent is to sell it though might as well just sell it as is and let the buyer figure out what option to choose. . .or maybe just use it as is. I agree with the earlier post that $750 to $800 is probably tops on the A5 as it is. The 1100 is $450 to $500.

    Are you planning on putting it up for auction on this site? When? Classic definition of market value is it's worth is what someone is willing to pay in an open market arms-length transaction. I know of know better way to determine that than thru this auction site. Set your reserve at the low end of the range of values you've been given and let the auction process go to work for you. An extra barrel for this gun is not THAT hard to come by. It might also appeal to a turkey hunter as is! Good luck - nice gun.

    Thanks for the insights, guys. I also appreciate the compliments on the guns - I've always insisted on keeping them dry, clean, oiled, cased, and protected from humidity & temperature variations unless I had them in the field, which was very rarely.

    I will be selling the gun as-is, but I also have a question about that process (being new to this arena).

    I get the impression that I do NOT need a firearms license to sell my guns via auction on this site (or any other for that matter). Can someone confirm that for me? Otherwise, I'm not sure what other options I may have aside from one co-worker who has demonstrated some interest in the A5.

    Oh... I do prefer to deal on this site, especially given the nice reception and striaght forward feedback and insights I've consistenly received. The input I've received in here is consistent with my own perspectives and knowledge, but also fills in the gaps of knowledge and expertise that I do not personally possess.

    no license required. If you sell it out of state you'll need an FFL from the buyer's side. You must ship to an FFL who will then transfer it legally to the new owner. Most sales in your own state will not require anything. Some FFL' won't accept shipments from individuals. so state you are not an ffl in the description.
