First Rifle

Hey guys about to buy my first rifle but want to know what rifle is better suited for me i want to do target shooting and hunting small poop eg birds rabits. I am looking at the savage .17 hmr or the .22lr

any help would be great

    Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    It would be my suggestion to go for the 22LR, as it is less expensive ammo...you can get 2, 3 or even 4 boxes for the price of 1 17HMR. You will get more practice time, and get better proficiency. This will also give you an excuse to add on to your collection later with a 17HMR.

    A++ on the 22lr ammo is cheap and ruger 10/22 is a great rifle.Many options and improvements for the gun and fairly cheap new or used.

    HI, If you want to do a little hunting and target shooting, check the state you are in. Some states only allow hunting with bolt action rifles. This is a little expensive, but a very nice gun for what you want and I personnal have one and love it. A Kimber HS, if you look you can find them used on the auction side.

    For the rabbits, squirrels, etc. there are great loads like W-W Power Point and CCI Mini-Mags, and you can always plink with the bulk stuff from Wally World.

    The 22lr is a classic, but since I started shooting my 17hmr my 22lr has not gone anywhere. Sure accurate 22lr are more common now and so the cost of the rifles will be similar. The better grades of 22lr ammo that you would have to feed such a 22lr are pushing the price of 17hrm ammo so as I see it there is no great saving there either. The savage 17hmr you ask about is great rifle, just make sure you get one with the accutrigger in it. The best thing about the 17hmr is that it has much greater range over the 22lr. So IMHO if you figure on shooting/hunting 75yds and closer get the 22lr. If you figure on 75yds and farther will be the norm get the 17hrm.

    can't go wrong with a 10/22 in 22lr, later on you can even update to a 17 mach 2 for faster flatter performance. it is not as fast as the 17 hmr but will hold its own out to 125 yards no problem. and accurate i have a savage in 17 mach 2 and it has no problem at 30 yards just putting all in one hole. have not had time to go out further yet but others may tell you it is a dieind caliber but it is coming back since the 17 hmr has gotten so expensive.
    the 10/22 by ruger has so many modifactions you can do that it would make your head spin. my one close freind tricked his all the way out and now has a 10/22 that will shoot just under a 3/8" at 100 yards.
    he has every aftermarket trick, gadget, stock, trigger and chrogentically treatting the new aftermarket barrel. all of this to hunt squirells. he has dropped $1400 in it and that does not include the $500 scope he put on it.
    but the basic 10/22 will work fine. that just shows what all you can do to a simple gun.

    Cant beat a .22 for a first rifle. they are great guns and cheap to shoot. I would reccomend looking into the ruger 10/22. A really nice semi automatic .22 and they are great because you can customize them to look however you want[8D]
